Most of Poland is flat or rolling farm land. In the south are the mountains. A couple of weeks ago, in talking to a Polish gentleman, he recommended we go to Zakopane, the Aspen of Poland as he called it. So that’s where we’re headed. The elevation change brings a change in vegetation. Some of these pines are as big as the ones in Oregon. Using the GPS for navigation sometimes gives interesting results. Today it led us into a construction project for the “Polish Autobahn”. As a result, the GPS couldn’t determine a suitable detour and we got turned around. It took us a couple of hours to get back on track, but in the process we came upon this luxury resort in the middle of nowhere.
Since it was time for lunch, we decided to take advantage of our lucky misfortune. By late afternoon we were higher in the hills and we found a uniquely decorated rural hotel. It would appear the owner probably spent some time in the USA. We ended up with a great room with a balcony overlooking a hillside. Because we had such a large sumptuous lunch, we decided to take a light evening meal of wine and snacks on our balcony.
